Ivory

Ivory has been a material for arts and ornaments in India for more than 2,000 years. Unlike the African Elephant, the Indian elephant is a domesticated and venerated animal and because of religious beliefs regarding the taking of life, ivory in India has generally been harvested from domesticated or dead animals. With international restrictions on the export/import of ivory objects the number of ivory craftsmen has been greatly reduced. These pieces are remnants from days gone by.
